Final day....

turns out my performance was acceptable at all! I think I made right choice to self-teach string bass because I have wanted to learn string like viola or violin even though my parents banned me to! It's not as time-consuming as finale work, so I think I will practicing. If I can, I might be in orchestra!
If I get to have tutor for stringbass, I will get more callus!
Bye!

Google day 11.27.2012(5th day)

Hello, there! this will be last google project because I will be very busy on winter and after.... if you want more exercise, comment, and I will upload it.

Lets do several exercises.

..

,...ignore chemistry stuff...

Finally, we are playing with bow! You must straighten your arm whatsoever and move it like pendulum.

It will take a bit of time for german bow user because it feels weird at first ^^

Sorry I have been incredibly busy....so I can't explain much but i will upload a lot of exercises here.

bow!

11/16(google day 4)

Sorry i was late....

things gets harder as you need to put pictures for explicit lecture(?)

I will update the picture.

you will have to practice how to grab your bow

And You MUST know all the parts of bow.

if its french,
1) Hold the bow in your left hand near the tip with the frog pointing to the right.
2) place the bow between your right thumb and index finger. tip of thumb contacts the stick next to the frog and your index extend to ferrule
3) shape the remaining finger on the bow stick as shown.
4) turn your right hand over, and be sure your thumb is covered.
5) Hold the bow repeat the exercises on page 8.

for german bow:
1) hold the bow in your left hand near the tip with the frog pointing to the right.
2) Place the frog in your right hand at the base joints of your fingers
3) put your thumb on top of the bow while the tips of the first and second fingers touch the side of the stick and frog.
4) Hook your fourth finger underneath the frog touching the ferrule. Allow the 3rd finger to curve and relax.

Before using your bow, make sure you must 'shadow'it. It removes the ash and residue on bow and helps sounds better
1) Using tension screw, tighten the bow hair.
2) Place the bow rosin in your left hand and hold bow in your right hand
3) Shadow bow by slowly moving BOW back and forth on the rosin.
-There you will see some white powder. Stop when it doesn't come out anymore.

The reason I talk about bow even though we dont use it right now is because you should know about how to handle bow and know all basic notes before using it!

Now,I will show you new notes with pictures!

Make sure you have a metronome tuner  when you pluck for rhythm and pitch! If the pitch is high or low, then look at the tuning keys of string that is out of pitch, and fasten it if the pitch is low, or loosen it when too high.

* note: even though book says you should use 4 fingers, actually just use two fingers then use 4 fingers when you get used to it.

hello, long time no see. Dont forget Essential Element s for doublebass!

now lets play!

we will learn how to play G. G is 4th string.

G G G rest, G G G rest, G G G G, G G G rest(4/4 beat)

next one is F#. # means raise the note by half step.

F# is on D string, 4 position. book says you have to play with 4 fingers, but just hold string with two
left fingers and pluck it with only two fingers.

F# F# F# rest, F# F# F# rest, F# F# F# F#, F# F# F# rest

Next:

G G G rest; F# F# F# rest, G G F# F# , G F# G rest(repeat once)

It helps to say note name while playing.

several more exercises:

G G F #rest, G G F#, G G F# F#, G F# G

time to read E. This is E on D string, not 1st E string.

E E E rest, E E E rest, E E E E, E E E rest.

3 notes!

G G F# F#, E E F# rest, E E F# f#, G G G  rest(repeat)

Practice these today for now. Bye!

next time i will write how to use bow

(last friday: 10/4)

Finally bought Essential Elements for String bass/ Double bass.

Wow it hurts so~~~much! I got two blisters and callus in my hand in one day.

But it's fun!

Stuff I learnd:

Pizz: pizzicato- pluck strings with right index and middle finger(use two finger. one finger will hurt you pretty much)

String notes: When you hold string bass facing at where you are looking at, count four strings from right to left: E, A, D, G

Bass Clef: a set of notes
Notes in lines: G B D F A
Notes in space: F A C E G B

At first, when you practice, play open D

practice 1 (4/4 beat) D D D rest, D D D rest, D D D D, D D D rest.( zero above measure means open string, which means you don't hold string with your left finger)

Make sure it sounds good( by saying good, it means at least it doesn't give you goose bump)

2)After getting used to practice 1, do same thing with open note A.

* String bass always has Bass Clef.

3) Two's a team

play: D D D rest, A A A rest, D D A A, D D D rest.

At Pierrot's Door
D D D A, D rest A rest, D D A A, D A D rest.

Now lets jump!
D D D rest, A A A rest, D D A A, D D D rest
Mixing!
 D A D, rest, A D A rest, D A D A, D D D rest

Next one has repeating sign. For those who doesn't know, it looks like two dots with double lines( one slim one thick). Unless given specific direction, return to very first note in first measure for one time.

* to keep steady beat, count the beat 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &. Say number in upbeat, and say AND between two notes/rest/ note and rest.

D D rest rest, A A rest rest, D rest A rest, D A R rest(repeat)

Another one:
D rest A rest, A A D rest, A D rest rest, D A D rest(repeat!) dont' forget to count!!

Next time I will upload post about new notes,. Bye!!
